Today Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce (AGCC) announced the widely anticipated finalists in the 2019 Northern Star Business Awards. Now in their 16th year, the high-profile awards recognise the exceptional achievements of companies throughout the region.
Score Group plc is honoured to have been named, together with Mintlaw Academy, as a finalist in the Inspiring Futures category. This award recognises companies and schools working in partnership to prepare the next generation for the move into the world of work.
Score works closely with local Primary and Secondary schools and shares a long standing relationship with Mintlaw Academy that has spanned over 20 years. This was formalised in 2017 when Score and Mintlaw Academy signed a Developing the Young Workforce North East Flagship Partnership.
For 31 years Score has placed its Modern Apprenticeship (MA) programme at the heart of the company, with almost a third of the company’s 900 UK-based employees being apprentices
Mintlaw Academy places a strong emphasis on technical education and is committed in its approach to supporting students into careers in engineering. The school embraces the involvement of a large employer such as Score being keen to contribute towards a well-rounded education for its pupils.
Over the last 12 months Score has embarked on a period of growth, resulting in an increased requirement for new entrants to the apprenticeship programme. Score values its close relationship with local schools including Mintlaw, to engage with school pupils from a young age and to help those with an interest in Engineering to realise their ambitions and to understand the opportunities that are available within Score.
Score has worked with the school to provide work experience placements to pupils for a number of years and now offers weekly placements spanning a whole term; allowing the opportunity to sample part of a Modern Apprenticeship and helping to develop employability skills.
Score offers workplace tours, careers talks, mock interview sessions, support at careers fairs and the opportunity to sign up for a Foundation Apprenticeship in conjunction with North East Scotland College in Fraserburgh. As well as engaging with pupils, Score has built a strong relationship with Mintlaw Academy staff, discussing the specific needs of individual pupils coming on work placements and even offering short placements for school staff to experience first-hand the work undertaken at Score.
It is hoped that partnerships such as the one between Mintlaw Academy and Score will improve pupil attainment and increase the number of applications to join Modern Apprenticeship programmes.
The partnership between Score and Mintlaw Academy has already seen a number of success stories. Two Mintlaw Academy pupils are amongst those in the first cohort of Score’s Graduate Apprenticeship programme, offered in collaboration with The Robert Gordon University.
In December 2018, representatives of Mintlaw Academy attended Score’s annual Apprenticeship Awards to witness a former student winning Score’s coveted Apprentice of the Year title.
