Apprenticeship – Machinist, Gas Turbines (Peterhead)

Experience you will gain

All Machinist Apprentices based at Score Energy spend the first year “off the job” at the training providers facility undertaking the SVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5 and the relevant National Certificate qualification. During this period, you will learn new skills including manufacturing, use of hand tools, understanding materials, machining, hand fitting techniques, use of manual lathe and milling machines. From years 2 to 4 you will be given placements in the companies machining repair workshop and be exposed to an increasingly wide variety of work scopes on various manual machines. As your development continues you will be extended to operating CNC machines including programming and safe operations. By the time you complete your 4-year MA you will be proficient in safe operations of a wide range of lathe and milling machines, carrying our repair work scopes, manufacturing a multitude of turbine components and associated equipment. Our manufacturing facilities are world class, and you will be given responsibility for the safe and correct operation of our machines to meet the needs of our clients’ specifications.

Your academic training will extend to HNC as a minimum. Your experience will be supplemented by additional work-based training courses included but not restricted to Manual Handling, Banksman Slinger and Gantry Crane Operation.

By the end of year 4 you will have achieved your Modern Apprenticeship and will embark on additional training and development to include specialist experiences This develops your problem-solving abilities and extends your MA training through potential courses including, CNC Operation and CNC Programming. You will grow in competence during this phase allowing you to qualify as EngTech via our accredited route via IMechE.

You will be supported each step of the way in developing your skills and knowledge on a wide variety of industrial machines. This develops skills in repair and manufacture of an extensive range of engine turbine components and accessories. This apprenticeship suits individuals that get a buzz from problem solving, working independently and making components from raw material to a required specification. The ability to turn out correct and consistently finished work pieces is especially important. As you gain experience you will increase in confidence and ability and be able to handle more sophisticated work scopes and become more independent in your application of our tried and tested techniques.

turbine systems will feature in the competency development opportunities. As your ability and value to the company’s operation increases you will be given opportunities to travel to other locations including UK and overseas. By the end of your training period, you will be proficient in conducting mechanical tasks, assessing the condition of a wide variety of specialist equipment, carrying out repair and refurbishment, conducting re-assembly and testing operations to industrial standards.

Entry requirements

Our preferred applicants will hold the following qualifications:

  • National 5 or equivalent in Mathematics and English
  • National 5 or equivalent in three from the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Graphical Communications, Business Studies, Accounts, Art and Design, Craft and Design, Engineering Science or a relevant Skills for Work qualification

 

An applicant with a Foundation Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering will be deemed to meet all of the above criteria.
