Non-Destructive Examination (Peterhead, Scotland)

Overview

  • Apprenticeship duration: 5 years
  • During years 1 and 2, you will attend college on day release

Qualifications you will work towards

  • A National Certificate (NC) in Measurement and Control
  • Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing (PCN) Level 2 qualifications in dye penetrant inspection, magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic inspection, radiographic inspection
  • A Modern Apprenticeship in Non-Destructive Examination (NDE)

You will complete additional in-house training on areas including positive material identification, ferrite testing, hardness testing and calibration.

Off-site training with a Level 3 Non-Destructive Examination technician will take place each year.

Experience you will gain

You will spend your time working in the Non-Destructive Examination department, completing on-the-job training whilst building knowledge and understanding of a variety of specialist examination and testing methods. You will also work towards academic qualifications and professional certifications.

Typical responsibilities

 You will carry out a wide variety of specialist examination and testing of equipment, materials, and components, looking for surface and subsurface cracks, fractures, and imperfections, or carrying out material identification techniques. You will carry out procedures in dye penetrant inspection, magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic, radiography and positive material identification, being trained to international and accredited standards on all methods. You will also carry out hardness testing, ferrite testing, overlay thickness monitoring and water analysis.

This career is well-suited to those with attention to detail, an interest in science subjects and with a keen interest in developing their technical understanding and ability.

Entry requirements

 Our preferred applicants will hold the following qualifications:

  • National 5 or equivalent in Mathematics and English
  • National 5 or equivalent in two from the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Graphical Communications, Art and Design, Computing, Craft and Design, Engineering Science or a relevant Skills for Work qualification

Selection process

Applicants that meet the above entry requirements will be invited to undertake an aptitude test. Successful applicants will then be taken forward to the next stage of the selection process.
