Score Leak Survey Eliminates 66kt of CO2e, Saving USD $5 Million a Year

Our leak survey for an LNG operator led to a reduction of 66kt CO₂e emissions a year – a mass equivalent to a large cruise ship. This saved our client USD $5 million a year.

Situation

Our client identified significant corrosion on a 6″ x 10″ control valve actuator on an offshore platform producing dry gas and condensate. The valve functions as a pressure control let letdown to flare from a production test separator, which is used for six months a year.

Action

After reviewing the valve’s performance history, we carried out a visual inspection and through-valve leak detection survey using our MIDAS® Meter – a key component of our Emission Elimination toolkit.

We assessed the valve to be a bad actor due to undiagnosed through-valve leakages.

Result

Our survey revealed the valve was passing 88kg/min of process gas (77% methane) to flare. After considering our recommendations and the financial and environmental risk assessment, the client isolated the valve.

Our emissions elimination expertise delivered:

  • A reduction in asset leaks into the atmosphere by avoiding flaring 66kt CO₂e a year.
  • Saving USD $5 million a year for our client.
