Score Acquires Young & Cunningham

Score acquires intellectual property for Young & Cunningham product range

Score has acquired the complete intellectual property (IP) for the Young & Cunningham product range, securing its long-term future and bringing manufacture and support together under one owner.

The addition of Young & Cunningham to Score’s wider portfolio of intellectual property (IP) reflects the company’s proactive approach to obsolescence management. By safeguarding critical technical drawings, product knowledge and manufacturing data, Score can ensure the continued manufacture of new equipment and long-term support of Young & Cunningham products already in service. The acquisition also builds on Score’s existing valve, actuation, repair and through-life support capabilities.

Young & Cunningham has a history in valve manufacturing and fluid control spanning more than a century. Its equipment has served naval and marine platforms for over 55 years. The business began supplying the Ministry of Defence in the late 1960s, initially designing and manufacturing valves for warships built on the Tyne. Its work has included supplying valves for the aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.

The range includes globe, gate and check valves, alongside marine products including storm valves and sea and sounding cocks. Storm valves, for example, help prevent backflow and protect vessels against water ingress during heavy seas.

James Geddes, managing director, marine defence at Score, said:
“Marine and defence is an important part of Score’s long-term growth plans. This investment gives us more scope to support future programmes, while taking responsibility for a product range that customers have relied on for decades.”

“For those customers, continued access to parts and technical expertise is essential. Their vessels need to be supported for many years, and they need suppliers who are committed for the long term. We want customers to have confidence in choosing Young & Cunningham products, knowing that Score will be there to support them.”

For customers with equipment already in service, Score will provide genuine spares and components, repair, overhaul and refurbishment, as well as technical and engineering support. This will also include upgrades, modernisation and help managing obsolescence where parts are becoming difficult to source. Manufacture of new Young & Cunningham equipment will support both existing vessels and future programmes.

Over the coming months, Score will put long-term manufacturing arrangements in place for the full Young & Cunningham range. Spares, repairs and support will continue as normal during this period.

Customers are invited to discuss the Young & Cunningham equipment they have in service, future requirements and any parts that are becoming difficult to source.
