Our people and their expertise are key to who we are at Score. As we celebrate more than 40 years of leading the way in total valve management and emissions elimination, we’d like to introduce you to our team, sharing their insights on life at Score and the energy industry.
Tell us about your role with Score
My journey began nearly 30 years ago. When I was 15, I aspired to be a footballer – I represented Scotland at under-16 and semi-professional level as well as playing for Fraserburgh in the Highland League for almost 10 years. I retired from semi-pro football at 27 to focus on my career and family. I was always interested in engineering and was given the opportunity to grow with the business into a senior leadership role at quite an early age. I joined Score as a mechanical apprentice in 1996. Since then, I’ve held various roles, from technician to team leader and works manager, before taking up my previous role as Operations Manager for Scotland, driving the growth of the repair and service business in the Europe & Africa division.
Now, in my global role, I’m focused on expanding our emissions elimination and valve management services throughout the organisation, helping our customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and improve operational efficiency across their assets. I’m excited about the opportunity and believe we can revolutionise valve and emissions management for our customers as they navigate the decarbonisation landscape on their path toward sustainability.
Can you describe your industry experience?
I’ve worked in nearly every area of the company throughout my career – from the valve/machine workshops to the drawing office, to offshore operations – before moving into the commercial side of the business leading our repair-quoting team. For the past 20 years, I have been part of the production management team responsible for the delivery of our repair and services throughout Europe and Africa. During that time, I have led major projects including the launch of our On-site Services division in 2016. That division has grown into a multi-million-pound operation, delivering emissions mitigation and flange management services to the market in support of our core valve business globally.
Our training and competence programmes are second to none which means that quality is embedded throughout the organisation. During my career, I have achieved an HNC in engineering as part of my apprenticeship and, more recently, I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business management with distinction from Robert Gordon University. This broad experience has given me a deep understanding of both the technical, and strategic sides of the business.
What trends do you see in the industry?
The industry is undergoing a significant shift, with a clear focus on reducing methane emissions and transitioning away from fossil fuels. That said, oil and gas will remain a part of the energy mix for the foreseeable future. Our role at Score is to support this transition by helping our customers decarbonise their operations.
With 75% of fugitive emissions coming from valves and a further 10% from flanged or bolted connections, Score’s expertise in mitigation is invaluable. Furthermore, the drive to reduce routine flaring and venting has seen a significant increase in demand for our proprietary acoustic through-valve leak detection technologies (Midas) which offers both handheld and fixed monitoring solutions for operators. I believe that as technology improves industry will move towards autonomous monitoring, so it is important that we enhance our existing source-level monitoring services with site-level technologies like drones and fixed sensors tailored to the demands of evolving legislation.
What differentiates Score?
Our people are what sets us apart. More than 40 years of knowledge, experience, and our ability to react quickly to provide comprehensive, end-to-end emission reduction solutions for our customers. There are many emissions LDAR service providers, but very few that can detect, quantify, and offer the solution to the problem. Because we understand the failure modes of the leaking components and know what to do to fix them, we can eradicate the problem from our customers and deliver regulatory compliance through our digital software.
Solving problems is what we do. With all of our services and capabilities in-house, we can solve problems efficiently without relying on external providers. When our customers have a problem, we pride ourselves on engineering the problem out. That means harnessing decades of experience to deliver the right solution at the right time – whatever it takes. This agility and reliability have helped us build strong, lasting relationships with our customers.
We have a strong commitment to our people. Our award-winning apprenticeship and training programmes ensure our people are ready to tackle any challenge and engineer the problem out.
What excites you about working for Score?
For me, it’s all about the people. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the most talented and dedicated individuals in the industry, and I genuinely enjoy seeing others grow and succeed within the business.
I can honestly say that Score feels like family. It’s often joked that I’m “Score to the core”, but that could be said of many others here, too. The sense of shared purpose, working together to engineer out our clients’ problems, makes working here so fulfilling. I’m excited to see what the future holds as we continue to innovate and make a difference for our customers and the planet.
